RED1-NT

The Non-Self Test RED1

Explosion-proof flame detection for systems where optical self-test is not required.

Purpose-Built for Specific System Requirements

The RED1-NT provides the same rugged, explosion-proof flame detection platform as the standard RED1 without integrated optical self-test functionality.

This configuration is selected when project specifications do not permit automated self-test, when downstream systems may interpret self-test signals as alarm conditions, when facility policy requires manual inspection and testing by operators, or when simpler detector logic is preferred within a specific control architecture.

Key Features

  • Multi-Spectrum Sensing: UV (185–260 nm), IR (0.715–3.5 µm), and Visible (480–560 nm) sensors.

  • 120° Conical FOV: Wide field of view reduces the number of units needed per coverage zone.

  • Manual Testing Compatible: Designed for systems with external or operator-driven test procedures.

  • NEMA 4X Explosion-Proof Housing: Class I Div 1 & 2 Groups B, C, D · Class II Div 1 & 2 Groups E, F, G · Class III.

Confirm RED1-NT Alignment with Your Project

If your project specifies a non-self-test detector or you are evaluating system compatibility, Sierra can help confirm that the RED1-NT aligns with your control architecture and testing procedures.

The Engineering Behind the RED1-NT

The RED1-NT uses the same proprietary detection algorithm as every model in the RED1 family. It cross-correlates spectral intensity, frequency distribution, and rate-of-change across all three sensor bands to differentiate hydrocarbon flame signatures from common industrial interference.

During FM testing, the RED1 platform achieved a 2.75-second average response to a 1 sq. ft. Heptane fire at 80 feet on the axis. Four field-selectable sensitivity settings (20, 40, 60, and 80 ft) allow installers to tune detection range to site conditions.

The only difference: the RED1-NT omits the automated optical self-test routine, leaving all testing under operator or system control.

What Sets Sierra Apart

Sierra Safety Technology has manufactured flame detection equipment for nearly 40 years with zero product recalls and zero failures resulting in loss of life. RED1 units installed over 30 years ago remain in active service today.

The RED1-NT reflects Sierra’s engineering philosophy: keep the design robust, avoid unnecessary complexity, and deliver reliable performance over long service lifecycles.

Frequently Asked Questions

The RED1-NT is identical to the RED1-ST in detection technology, sensitivity settings, field of view, relay outputs, and hazardous area approvals. The only difference is that the RED1-NT does not include integrated optical self-test functionality.

Common reasons include project specifications that do not permit automated self-test, downstream control systems that may interpret self-test signals as alarm conditions, facility policies mandating manual operator testing, or regulatory requirements that mandate hands-on inspection.

No. The RED1-NT uses the same multi-spectrum UV/IR/Visible sensors and fire algorithms as the RED1-ST. Detection speed, range, sensitivity settings, and false alarm rejection are identical.

Operating: −40°C to +85°C. Storage: −55°C to +110°C.

Two ¾-inch NPT feed-through hubs. Screw terminals accept 14–22 AWG wire. Dimensions are 5.4 × 4.8 × 3.7 inches (13.7 × 12.2 × 9.4 cm) at approximately 3 lbs.

Yes. The RED1-NT Fire Relay and Fault Relay can each be connected as either N.O. or N.C. The detector can also be field-programmed for latching or non-latching operation.
